Local Volunteering Opportunities for Kids in Austin
- Pop Up Birthday provides birthday boxes to children in foster care who would not otherwise get to have a birthday party. You can volunteer by becoming a birthday buddy or by organizing a drive to collect items for local foster care kids here in Austin.
- Generation Serve offers family volunteering opportunities for all ages- from little kids through teens! Sign up for age appropriate events listed on their calendar.
- Safe in Austin Rescue Ranch allows kids 8 and older to volunteer to take care of their animals. There are birds, cats, dogs, cows, pigs, rabbits, goats, sheep, horses, and more!
- Austin Allies has a Holiday Helpers Party every year where you can bring the kids and help wrap gifts and make cards. They also have many kid-friendly volunteer opportunities coming up, like Community First Village Service Day and more. Check their calendar.

- Brown Santa allows families to volunteer their time wrapping gifts, sorting toys, and more.
- Austin Parks Foundation offers a family-friendly volunteer opportunity a couple times a year with It’s My Park Day. Sign up to join others in beautifying our local parks.
- Keep Austin Beautiful hosts events throughout the year, like Keep Austin Beautiful Day (coming up on April 9, 2022). Or Love Where You Live Day (the second Saturday of every month). Volunteer to pick up trash- you can request a free cleanup kit.
- Mobile Loaves & Fishes has volunteer positions for families throughout the year and also offers a summer camp for kids in 1st-8th grade during the summer!
- Give Pulse lists many family-friendly volunteering opportunities throughout Austin. We signed up for an event at Pease Park, where we planted milkweed to attract monarch butterflies. The kids had a blast and felt so proud.
- Youth2Seniors brings joy to those in nursing homes across Austin.
- Partnerships for Children offers a program for teens to give back.
- Austin Miracle League pairs special needs baseball players with a “Buddy” to assist them on the field as well as at bat.
- Austin Pets Alive lets kids age 12 and up volunteer with a parent. You have to start with a service like laundry and serve once in their thrift shop, then you can pick and choose what jobs you’d like to help out with.
Acts of Kindness
- Make cards & cookies for your local fire department and take it down to them.
- Make Christmas cookies for your neighbors.
- Rake your neighbors’ leaves for them while they’re away at work.
- Make homeless kits with hand warmers, socks, toothbrush/toothpaste, water, snacks, deodorant and pass them out to the homeless person you pass on the corner.
- Make cards for residents of a local nursing home.
- Buy the person in the car line behind you coffee
- Go on a hike and bring a trash bag with you. Pick up trash as you hike.
- Donate a coat to Coats For Kids.

- Find your teacher’s classroom wish list and buy an item to donate.
- Donate toys to Dell Children’s Hospital.
- Give 5 random people compliments.
- Leave two $5 H-E-B gift cards on your trash can and two on your recycle can at the curb on trash pick-up day for the trash & recycling collectors.
- Paint kindness rocks and leave them throughout the neighborhood.
