Get On Island Time at Son’s Island
One of our favorite adventures is only about an hour’s drive away from Austin, but you definitely don’t feel like you’re still in Texas while you’re here. If you’re looking for the perfect summer getaway for your Austin staycation, get on island time at Son’s Island.

Cabana Map
The cabana map is one of the most important parts of booking your visit to Son’s Island. If you have little kids, the best spots are closest to the frog slide (A-1 through K-4). Every cabana has water access and there really isn’t a bad spot on the island, but we really enjoy being able to keep an eye on the kids while they do the slide (repeatedly).
Tips
Remember to bring food for the whole day (lunch, dinner, snacks, drinks, water, things to grill, etc). We like to bring pre-made sandwiches for lunch and something like hot dogs to grill for dinner. Also bring: sunscreen, bug spray, portable speakers, floats, hats, towels, sand toys, swim suits, change of clothes for the drive back home, charcoal, lighter fluid, and a lighter.
The Island
We spent the last weekend of summer with our friends out on Son’s Island. The chill vibes and being on “island time” for a day was just what we all needed before the hustle and bustle of school began again.
Son’s Island is in Texas, but you would never know it. There’s a tropical feeling that hits you as soon as you cross over the bridge.
Rentals
You can rent SUP boards and kayaks by the hour or for the whole day. You can also rent the floating lily pads, which end up being the kids’ favorite part (besides the frog slide).
The Cabanas
Each cabana sits right on the water or has a private pathway down to the water. You also get a grill (bring your own charcoal, lighter fluid, and lighter), a hammock, and a picnic table.
Games
There’s a sand volleyball court that my kids love to use like a beach when there’s not a game going on (bring your shovels and buckets). They also have lawn games like corn hole and giant Connect 4.
Glamping
If you don’t want the fun to end, you might want to consider glamping on the island! They provide the tents, cots, air mattresses, lanterns, fires, and s’mores! They even have live music on most Friday and Saturday nights!
We love having such a fun place to visit so close to Austin and can’t wait to go back next summer!
