What Is Southern Etiquette Consultants?
Southern Etiquette Consultants is run by Rebecca Murphy (Mrs. Murphy to the kids). She provides a comprehensive range of classes and workshops designed to teach children and teens various life skills and social manners. These programs are tailored to different age groups and focus on practical, real-world applications of etiquette, from basic manners at the dinner table to professional conduct in public settings.
Why Life Skills and Etiquette Matter
I have joked with my mom friends for YEARS about putting all of our kids into some sort of “manners camp”. We as parents all try to teach manners to our kids, but most of the time it feels like in one ear and out the other. Kids have a tendency to not really listen when their parents tell them something over and over, but when a teacher or other adult tells them the same thing, they listen! That’s why I was so excited to find Rebecca and see if she could work her magic on my kids.
Etiquette training from a young age not only promotes respect for others but also builds self-esteem and self-respect. Children and teenagers equipped with these skills are more likely to succeed academically, socially, and eventually, professionally. I want to set my kids up for success later in life, and I believe learning these valuable life skills at an early age will be something they can carry with them through their teenage years, college, and beyond.
Key Programs and Their Benefits
Children’s Etiquette Program
Aimed at children in kindergarten through 6th grade, this program covers fundamentals such as polite greetings, table manners, and the importance of gratitude. The skills learned here lay the groundwork for children to interact confidently and courteously in any social situation. Children’s Etiquette Classes are $350.00 per student for 4 one-hour long classes. The last class consists of a 3 course meal where they practice the two styles of dining they have learned.
Teen Etiquette Program
For teenagers in 7th-12th grade, navigating social scenarios can be challenging. The Teen Etiquette program focuses on advanced topics such as table manners, digital etiquette, and conversation skills. It prepares teens for the adult world, whether they’re entering the workforce, attending college, or simply engaging with peers. Teen Etiquette Classes are $350.00 per student for two 1.5 hour classes on Monday & Tuesday afternoons. The last class consists of a 3 course meal where they practice the two styles of dining they have learned.
The Local Impact
Southern Etiquette Consultants has become a cornerstone of community development in Austin. By empowering the city’s youth with the skills to handle various life situations gracefully, Rebecca Murphy is helping to contribute to a more polite, considerate community. Parents have reported noticeable improvements in their children’s confidence and behavior, both at home and in public.
Southern Etiquette Consultants stands out as a beacon of learning and development in Austin, offering much more than just etiquette lessons. They provide a foundation for young individuals to thrive in all aspects of life. For Austin parents looking to equip their children with essential life skills, Southern Etiquette Consultants offers a nurturing and professional environment where respect, integrity, and courtesy are prioritized.
What’s It Like?
The class takes place inside Rebecca’s gorgeous home around her dining room table. We took a sample class where Rebecca went over so many different life skills with the boys. These are skills we’ve been trying to teach them for years, and it felt very validating for the boys to hear it from an expert that these things actually matter! Look at people in the eyes when you speak to them! Hold the door for people! Have a strong handshake! Say “please” and “thank you”! Hearing it from another adult helped emphasis the importance of such simples acts.
She also went over the importance of a hand-written thank you note. This is something I have always had my boys do (that they always complain about). She explained the proper way to write one (hint: it’s just 4 sentences!). She spent the most time going over table manners and explained things like the right way to place your napkin on your lap, how to hold your drink, what utensils to use and when, and even what to do with a “bad bite” (hint: DO NOT SPIT IT INTO YOUR NAPKIN).
The best part came at the end when the boys got to practice their skills eating dessert (a brownie and ice cream). It was fun for them to experience the class and I could see the confidence and pride in their faces as they finished their desserts and thanked Mrs. Murphy.
Why We Love It
My kids were reluctant to go (manners class?! How boring!), but by the end they did not want to leave! My 6 year old asked me if we could come back and if he could sign up for more classes! Rebecca makes it super fun for the kids and the time flies by. She is warm, caring, and engaging and the kids just adore her. There is nothing boring about these classes! Even I learned a ton and was fascinated the entire time.
