When you think of a weekend in Fredericksburg, you may think of wineries and only adult things to do. We went in search of all the kid-friendly things and ended up pleasantly surprised by all that there is to do with kids in Frederiskcburg! It is the perfect little escape from Austin- not too far and there’s even a ton of kid-friendly spots to stop at along the way there. Here are the 10 best things to do in Fredericksburg with kids.

1. Hike Enchanted Rock

This was my kids’ favorite part of going to Fredericksburg. They love climbing to the top of Enchanted Rock and were thrilled that we did it even faster than the last time we went. My 4 year old was able to climb all the way up by himself and this made him ridiculously proud. At the top, I rewarded everyone with their favorite candy to celebrate (and also give a little sugar boost for the hike back down). Make sure you make reservations before you go! They will turn you away if they are full. Also, do not bring your dogs if you want to hike to the top. Dogs are welcome if you hike the other trails, but not on the summit trail to the top of Enchanted Rock.

2. Das Peach Haus

My boys liked Das Peach Haus just as much as my husband and I did, making it the perfect family-friendly spot. We purchased a bottle of wine (they will give you glasses) and some sodas from their country store (be sure to sample all the food inside as well!) and found a shady, relaxing spot near the little pond. Bring some food and make it a picnic! We saw kids fishing along the banks and pier of the pond, which is surrounded by beautiful conifer trees that make you feel like you’re in the woods somewhere. They even offer cooking classes and live music! There aren’t any peaches to pick here, but that doesn’t matter. My boys had fun playing in the big red truck and running around outside.

3. Jenschke Orchards

Jenschke Orchards is a pick-your-own farm in Fredericksburg that has strawberries in the spring, peaches and blackberries in the summer, pumpkins in the fall, and Christmas trees in the winter. They are closed on Mondays and Fridays. They also has a bounce pillow, a corn maze (in the fall), and a cute country store. If you’re hungry, there’s a Tex-Mex BBQ food truck on site. Pets are welcome (outside only).

4. Wildseed Farms

Wildseed Farms is a fun, FREE place to bring the kids! We liked walking around through the wildflowers, strolling through the butterfly garden, and getting some peach ice cream. They even have a vineyard and tasting room if you go without the kids. It’s such a beautiful spot- we even saw one couple get engaged while we were there!

5. Marktplatz von Fredericksburg (Market Square)

Right in the heart of downtown at the Market Square, you will find a cute little playground area that’s perfect for kids. The ground is bouncy and soft, and there’s a huge covered pavilion where you can bring some food and eat outside if you’d like to relax while the kids play. Occasionally, this is where the city will host festivals, concerts, and even an ice skating rink in the winter!

6. Clear River Ice Cream

Right down the street from Marktplatz von Fredericksburg is Clear River Ice Cream. They serve homemade ice cream, as well as baked goods and deli items. The theme is kitchy-50’s and Grease was playing on the tv while we were there. They offer over 35 flavors of ice cream (which was delicious), but I think the real winner was the Gooey Butter Cake we got. Holy yum! Don’t forget quarters so your kids can ride the little horse out front.

7. West End Pizza

We ate at West End Pizza the first night we arrived in Fredericksburg, and it ended up being the perfect kid-friendly spot. They have yard games like corn hole, Jenga, and Connect 4, and all the kids there ended up running around and playing together. The vibe is relaxed and the cocktails were especially good (you have to try the Blueberry Mint Refresher!). The pizza is great as well.

8. Texas Sunrise

We needed a good kid-friendly breakfast spot before we set out on our hike at Enchanted Rock, and Texas Sunrise ended up being the perfect place! It’s not that big, and there was a wait by the time we left, but we got there early enough to get seated right away. They have an awesome kids menu and the food came out quickly.

9. National Museum of the Pacific War

This place was on my list, but we ran out of time to actually go and visit. I blame that on the fact that our AirBnB had a hot tub, and the kids were begging to go back to the house to “swim” instead. I’ve heard such great things, and we will definitely go back to check this place out next time! Keep in mind that they are closed on Tuesdays.

10. The Pioneer Museum

This was another place that was on our list and we never made it to, but looks very kid friendly! The museum gives you a look into the daily life of the German pioneers of early Fredericksburg. See an old school house, a log cabin, a barn, and more. Kids 5 and under are free, and adults are only $7.50, making it an affordable outing right in the heart of downtown. They are closed Sundays.

Sauer-Beckmann Living History Farm is located in Stonewall, but you will drive right past it on your way to Fredericksburg. It’s adjacent to the Lyndon B.
