My Favorite Thing This Summer-Zilker Summer Musical: Matilda
When the sun sets at Zilker park, a tale of magic, mischief, and might is ready to unfold! Days/Times
The show runs every Thursday-Sunday night at 8:15 p.m. and is around 2 and a half hours long (the show I saw ended at 10:45 p.m.). The last show is on August 12, 2023.
Location and Parking
The Zilker Summer Musical is a FREE event that takes place at the Zilker Hillside Theater at Zilker Park. The Hillside Theater is next to Barton Springs, and free parking can be found after 6 p.m. in the Polo Fields at the top of the hill.
Admission/ When To Show Up
You do not need to purchase tickets or reserve a spot- just show up and enjoy the show! Please do bring some cash to donate during the show. These productions are always super professional and high quality, and it’s such a gift that we all get to see it for FREE!
It’s strongly encouraged that you show up early for the best seats. I try to gauge how early to arrive based on the size of our group. Last year we only had 3 in our group and had no trouble finding great seats at 7:45 p.m. This year we had 10 in our group, so we got there at 7:20 p.m. to ensure we could find enough space for a group that size.
What To Bring/Not Bring
- blankets or low-back chairs (under 28″)
- water, drinks, and snacks (no glass)
- cash or credit cards for donations and chair rentals/snacks
- a pencil or pen to fill out the raffle form
- portable fans or cooling towels to keep cool before the sun goes down
- hand sanitizer for the restrooms/portapotties that run out of soap
- card games to entertain the kids while you wait for the show to start
- bug spray
- NO DOGS ALLOWED
- higher camping chairs allowed in the back only
Kids Pre-Show Dance Party
Families are invited down on the stage on Saturdays before the show to learn some of the choreography from one of the dance numbers in Matilda the Musical.
The Show
For the uninitiated, Matilda is a timeless story crafted by the world-renowned author Roald Dahl. Matilda, a young, intelligent girl, uses her wit and a secret superpower to navigate through life’s challenges. The Zilker Summer Musical production captures the heart of this captivating tale, bringing it to life with a spellbinding performance that caters to all ages. The cast is an explosion of talent with singing voices so impressive you’ll wonder how they don’t all have record deals by now. Matilda is endearing and Miss Trunchbull will keep you laughing through the whole show.
Is It Kid-Friendly?
Absolutely! Kids of all ages will love it (assuming they can stay up late). The cast is mostly made up of kids, which makes it extra fun for kids to watch and relate to.
